Tangle in the Desert Retreat

Escape to a desert oasis of creativity at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center situated on 9 acres of the Sonoran Desert in beautiful Carefree, Arizona.   


All lodging rooms are located on-site and have private bathrooms, microwaves, refrigerators, a patio or balcony, and most have mountain views.  All meals are included and are prepared on-site.  Free wi-fi is accessible throughout the campus.  Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center is a non-smoking campus.


In your free time, you may wish to explore the three walking paths consisting of a Labyrinth, the Prayer Pathway, and Islands of Silence.  Downtown Carefree is within walking distance, with plenty of parking as well.


This all-inclusive, in-person-only Zentangle-inspired art retreat features 13 projects, with 8 core classes led by Maryland CZT Angie Gittles; Texas CZT Terri Young; Washington CZT Lisa Anderson; Pennsylvania CZT Sheila Grube; and Florida CZT Barbara (Joni) Paolucci.


While not restricted to CZTs, tangle experience is required.  Please note this is a "tangle-along" event, and no permission is granted to reteach any of the retreat projects.


This retreat is limited to approximately 40 tangle enthusiasts - or until all of the rooms are full.

Retreat Room Options and Cost Per Person

Lodging options consist of Single Occupancy, Double Occupancy, and Triple Occupancy.  Single and Triple options are limited.  A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required to reserve a spot.  Final payment may be made at any time by December 1, 2025, and may be split up into payments over the months until then.  THIS EVENT IS CURRENTLY SOLD OUT - and I am taking names for the WAIT LIST.

Cancellation and Refunds

Should you need to cancel, a full refund is available (minus non-refundable $100 deposit) until December 1, 2025.  After that, there are no refunds or cancellations unless your spot can be filled by the waiting list, if pertinent.  If the Retreat is cancelled, participants will receive a full refund.

Travelling to the Retreat

The closes airport is the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), approximately 35 miles away.  There is no free shuttle to the Retreat Center, so you will either need to rent a car or use a car service.  There is plenty of parking at the Retreat Center.

The workshop is for anyone who is interested in photography, no matter their level of experience. Whether you're a beginner who has just bought their first camera or an enthusiast who wants to improve their skills, you're welcome to join us!

When and where is the workshop?

Over the course of the workshop, you'll learn the basics of photography, including composition, exposure, and lighting. You'll also learn how to use your camera's manual mode and how to edit your photos in post-processing software. We'll also cover the basics of different types of photography, including landscape, portrait, and street photography.

The workshop meets once a week for 6 weeks. We offer both in-person and online options, so you can choose the one that works best for you. Our in-person workshops are held in New York City, and our online workshops are held via Zoom.

Who will be teaching the workshop?

Our instructors are experienced photographers who are passionate about sharing their knowledge with others. They'll be there to guide you every step of the way and answer any questions you have.

How much does the workshop cost?

The workshop costs $400 for the 6-week program. We offer a limited number of scholarships for students and those in financial need. Contact us to learn more.
